Mark-Alec Mellor: Many thinkers, from Pascal to Marx to Foucault, have called the idea of human nature into question. Is the concept of any use to us in our efforts to create a more peaceful world? For example, could we say that human nature must undergo a phylogenetic transformation—aided by natural selection (it has been suggested that women increasingly choose less violence-prone partners), by education, and by other social mechanisms—before perpetual peace becomes possible?
